A backflow system is an integral component of your sprinkler setup, particularly if your system is connected to a domestic (city) water supply or if you rely on a well. Mandated by the State of Idaho for the protection of all sprinkler systems, backflow systems act as a crucial barrier to prevent contamination from entering the domestic water supply through the sprinkler system.
Backflow assemblies, as depicted in the image, may be situated either above or below ground level. Similar to sprinkler pipes, it is essential to properly winterize backflow systems to shield them from freezing and potential breakage. This component is particularly vulnerable as its piping is often above ground and exposed to the elements.
It’s worth noting that if you use pressurized irrigation for your lawn, you may not have a backflow system.
